What Happens at a New Patient Consultation?
On of our friendly dentists will carry out your dental consultation. We would also ask you to bring with you either a list of medication you may be taking or alternatively a copy of a repeat prescription.
Having the above information is a very important part of the consultation, as this allows us to formulate a treatment plan which is tailored to your general medical and dental requirements.
A New Patient Dental Consultation will consist of the following:
- Discuss any outstanding health issues or concerns.
- Discuss medication and their interactions with your oral health.
- Listen to and discuss your dental goals and how you would like to be treated
- Full Clinical Charting to be taken
- Basic Periodontal Examination
- Soft Tissue Examination
- Oral Cancer Screen
- Treatment Planning
- Further Investigations
- Discussion
Charting
We carry out an in depth charting of existing restorations (fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures etc.), followed by a charting of any treatment we recommend as being necessary. Please note that treatment can be and is very often prioritised in stages and this helps many patients spread the cost of treatment.
Basic Periodontal Examination
Also known as CPITN (Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Need), this index allows us to make a rapid and accurate assessment of your treatment needs with regard to the gums and the underlying structures around the teeth. This is often a neglected or forgotten area of the mouth. Prevention starts with the foundations. There is no point in building a house on quicksand!
Soft Tissue Examination / Oral Cancer Screening
In line with many screening programmes, early detection of pre-cancerous changes leads to quick and relatively easy treatment. We carry out a soft tissue and oral cancer screening every six months on all our adult patients.
Treatment Planning
We strongly believe in empowering our patients. Before any treatment is carried out, we will discuss your options with you, and any decision you make will be followed with a treatment plan together with estimates.
All our treatment plans are tailored to the individual and we are sensitive to patient’s needs, circumstances and finances. Please do not hesitate to ask questions during or even after the consultation if you are unsure of anything that has been said. There is a lot to take in during a consultation and most of us remember the question once we have arrived home!
Further Investigations
Further investigations such as x-rays and study models may be required in order to gain more information before finalising a treatment plan. This sometimes includes referral for a specialist opinion.
With all investigations, we pride ourselves on keeping our patients up to date with our findings and how these findings may shape your treatment choices.
Our aim is to provide an excellent service, based on our clinical judgement and knowledge in order for our patients to achieve excellent oral health.
